Some facts about warts
Whether people suffering from warts have them in places that cannot be seen, or in exposed parts of their bodies, the fact is that warts can be extremely uncomfortable and embarrassing. However, just as warts are afflicting a significant and fast-growing, number of people around the world, medical scientists have been keeping pace. What are warts?
What exactly causes warts? Warts, referred to as Verrucae in the medical fraternity, usually appear as a small, solid blister, a cauliflower shaped skin eruption or a rough tumor. They are specifically caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and therefore can be termed as a viral infection. Although a relatively common ailment, warts are also contagious and can be transmitted through skin to skin contact. A person can also contract warts from the sharing of items such as towels or other things belonging to an infected person. Are all warts the same?

- Verruca vulgaris – This is the most common of warts and usually appears on knees and hands. It has a rough surface and protrudes outward from the affected area.
- Digitate or filiform – Also common warts that occur on or around the lips and eyelids. Such warts are usually finger-shaped or thread-like in appearance.
- Verruca acuminata / Condyluma acuminatum – These are venereal-type, warts that appear in the genital area.
- Verruca pedis / Verruca – These, referred to as plantar warts, often appear with multiple specks of black within hard lumps that are often painful. Feet soles, particularly the pressure points on them, are where such warts usually appear.
- Verruca plana – These warts generally affect the hands, knees, face, wrists and neck. They are usually flesh or tan-colored, small, flattened and smooth in nature. Such warts appear in vast numbers at the affected sites.
- Mosaic – These warts are of the plantar type and generally appear in a firmly clustered group. Feet soles and hands are where such warts commonly occur.
There are multiple reasons why warts affect some people and not others. However, in their pursuit to develop effective wart treatment, medication and wart removal methods, medical scientists conclude that there are many variable, factors that can explain why some people contract warts while others do not. Some of these variables include the type and level of contact with an infected individual, the immunity threshold of the person exposed and the strength and quality of the particular virus itself.
